Hi guys ! Are you tired of being in a big city? Are you stressed out at work and focused on meeting deadlines? STOP and take a deserved break few kilometers away from Singapore… And this time, don’t go to crowded, noisy resort. Instead, step into a world of peacefulness and live a weekend as you please, with massage, fresh fruits and a Bintang in your hand – Mutiara Beach Resort is waiting for you !
As the hotel is located on the North-East side of Bintan, it will take you a bit more time to reach it from Singapore. It is nonetheless pretty easy to get there! Take the ferry from Singapore (Bintan resort ferries, you can book from their website). Once arrived on the island take a cab directly to the resort. If you contact Marc, the owner of the resort, he will arrange your car upon your arrival which makes it even easier. It takes about 1h to get there and the ride, even if movementing, is worth the view.
The resort seats on a private 8ha beachfront coconut plantation and offers total privacy. The land is very special, as it was probably used during ancient times as a sacred place, for its very special grid of earth energy lines… The resort is composed of 11 bungalows, one beach club, one restaurant and one spa, spread over the land. You can also find TanaH Laut Adventures, an adventure travel company that offers several activities. Mutiara means “Pearl” in Bahasa Indonesian.
At Mutiara, you take time for yourself and you sync with the sun. Falling asleep early in the evening (Sunset is a 6PM) and waking up early in the morning. There is no pressure and no time constraint: you eat and drink want you want to and check-in and check-out with no time limits!
There are four types of Bungalows: the standard pavillons (4), the plus pavillons (4) , the river houses (2) and the Spa villa (1). Both times I went to Mutiara I stayed in one of the river house (picture below). The room is about 40sqm, has an en-suite bathroom, a fan and two sitting areas: one in front facing the coconut plantation over the beach and one on the back facing the river. The rate for this room is of $80++ (21% local taxes and service fee) per day.
Be aware, while in Mutiara, you will always be connected to the nature… Indeed, no real windows or real walls in the Bungalows, nor warm water in the shower (you will anyway need a cold water after a day in the heat!). It feels very cosy to enjoy your own private bungalow with the minimum required, very much helps to disconnect (even if you have wifi everywhere)…
Food and Drinks
Aaah Food & Drinks, one of my favorite topic ! During your stay at Mutiara, you can enjoy a complimentary breakfast composed of a drink and main of your choice. The restaurant is open from 7:30AM til 10PM which gives you plenty of time to try out different items on the menu. Mutiara as a Slow food commitment… Fresh products, sourced locally and prepared with care. You can enjoy local meals such as Nasi Goreng Ikan Bilis (fired rice with crispy anchovies) as well as international meals. The restaurant also has its own pizza oven (pizzas are good!). On Saturday nights, you can also experience a beach barbecue upon request… One of my favorite thing is to order a platter of fresh fruits while I am reading my book at the beach… Yes, the restaurant can serve you wherever you want in the premisces of the resort – that’s life !
Mutiara has its own river spa, built on the mangroves… It is such a peaceful areas you can even reach it by small boat if you wish to! You can also reach it by feet by walking over a bridge and you might be lucky enough to see a family of monkeys. Here, no noise expect the one of nature. You can choose between a selection of massages and scrub and even get to choice the aromas of the oil for your massage! I personally love the combinaton of Champaca and Patchouli, which reminds me of light Monoï… My go to is the de-stress river package: a 30-min body scrub followed by an one-hour full body massage (around SGD $82). Definitely one of the best massage I’ve had while in Asia!
Near the restaurant, you can find Tanah Laut Adventures, that proposes activities such as Sea or River kayaking, Paddle, mountain biking and so on. Just go ahead and talk with the owner, a friendly Australian man. He will find an activity that fits your wishes !
What else to do in Mutiara? Well, read a book, lay at the beach, go for a walk, snorkel, visit the nearbuy village (we were lucky enough to be invited to eat at a wedding last time we walked by the village)… You can also chill at the beach house while listen to Bob Marley (they seem to be a bit obsessed with him 😉 ) and play some games that are at your disposition. At night, do some star gazing and enjoy the quiteness.
Good to know:
- Language: Indonesian, the staff speaks okeyish English – enough so that everyone understands each other
- Currency: Rupiah but you can pay everything by card at the end of your trip
- Bill: Please double check the amount of your bill to make sure that no mistake was made, as the staff enters all the information manually
- There is a lot of mosquitoes and Sand flies, so come prepared and bring along long trousers for the evening and some insects repellent spray/cream (the staff gives mosquitoe cream and encent for the bedroom)
- Ask for the Detox Day trip package, which includes your transfer from the ferry, the destress river package and your lunch 😉 That will make you save money
- Do not book your ferry via the directferries website, it’s a scam…
