Hey guys,

As people living in Singapore, we all know that the quickest weekend gateway is in Bintan and Batam. Sure, these are not the most exotic locations of Sout East Asia… But they are worth the visit for a chill weekend!

So when my parents and sister came to visit me and wanted to escape the city for the weekend, Batam sounded like a good alternative (only 1 hour away).  Indeed, their main request was not to travel for more than 2 hours door to door from Singapore. After some research about the island, I’ve decided to book us a villa at Montigo Resort for the weekend.

Getting there

The hotel is located in Batam island, only a short 50-min ferry ride. The easiest way to reach the resort is to get the ferry from Tanah Merah (Singapore) to Nongsa (Batam). We booked the ferry through BatamFast, and were happy of the service! We paid $49 per person both ways. Once arrived in Nongsa, a car was waiting for us at the ferry terminal, sent by the hotel. The ride is only 5-10min long.

The Hotel

The resort is magnificent! Built on the hillside of Batam, it offers a number of villas to stay in. All of them are offering private pools and almost every villa comes with a roof terrace, where BBQ can be organised. The resort is quite big, thus is offering a buggy service across it! You can just dial-in the reception and they will send a buggy to pick you up and drive you at your desired location.

The hotel comprises 2 restaurants: Tadds – proposing all-day dining (between $8 and $15 for a main), and Pantai – focused on seafood, for your dinner experience (between $15 and $25 for a main). You can also chill by one of the pool and get a drink at Tiigo beach club. Private dinning and in-villa dinning are also available on request!

The resort has an in-house Spa, niched in the middle of the greenery, in a haven of peace, proposing a broad range of services.

It also proposes some activities such as sightseeing, water activities, fitness and kids club.

It has to be noted that the beach at the resort is rather small. Thus if what you are looking for is to lay at a real beach over the weekend, Bata isn’t the correct location! In our case, the comfort of the two big pools of the resort satisfied us enough to not miss the beach.

The Villas

Depending on the number of bedrooms that you wish to have on the villa (between 1 and 5), they can be located in different areas of the resort. We booked a 2-bedrooms villa (called Deluxe) and could choose between the Hill top, the Hill side, the Sea front and the Spa villa. Other villas (one, three, four and five bedrooms) are called premier villas and have specific areas allocated for them.

As stated earlier, all the villas offer private swimming pools, which is quite cool when you want some intimacy and enjoy a glass of wine while being in the pool! The 2-bedroom villa we stayed in was composed of three floors.

First floor: The entrance and the staircase for the other floors, a little bathroom, the living-room, the kitchen, the terrace and the pool.

Second floor: A master bedroom with en-suite bathroom offering both a rain shower and a tub (!), a bedroom with 2 single beds and en-suite bathroom.

Third floor: A sky terrace!

When we arrived, we had an issue with the water of the showers: it was too cold or too warm and the pressure was barely sufficient. When we reported the issue to the management, they immediately sent a team to fix the problem and proposed us to change villa. We accepted, and got upgraded to a villa with an even nicer view of the sea!

Food and Drink

Over our 3 days/2 nights stay, we had the chance to try both restaurants of the resort, as well as the beach club, and indulged ourselves with the breakfast twice.

The breakfast is held at Tadds restaurant and is magnificent. It offers a wide range of delicacies, both sweet and salty. As already stated, DO wake up on time to enjoy it, it is really worth it!

For lunch, we usually went to Tadds, as it is located just next to the main pool area. It is very convenient as it offers an all-day dining with affordable pricing (between $8 and $15). It proposes a range of dishes from western to Indonesian – All dishes we tried was rather good.

During the day, we would indulge ourselves at the beach club (Tiigo), with drinks and small snacks (you can also order a shisha if you please).

For dinner, we would go to Tadds (again) or to Pantai, the seafood restaurant of the restaurant, with a great view from the hill over the sea – perfect for sunset! The price of the food here is more expensive, but worthwhile taking into account the quality of the products we enjoyed that night! The atmosphere is also more intimate, perfect for a date night!

Among the activities that are offered by the resort, we experienced the spa as well as a mangrove tour among our three days stay.

The spa is wonderfully located, in a harvest of peacefulness. It proposes a range of different treatments, such as herbal compress massage, foot reflexology, firming wrap, Javanese lulur or ginger bath! You can also get some packages, such as the couples spa experience: Massage, Scrub, Manicure/Pedicure and special drink for approximately $254 for 2.

Personally, I tried a pedicure and a full body massage and I had a blast – I would have done another treatment if I would have stayed an extra day!

On our third day, we wanted to do something outside of the resort. Going downtown Batam to do some shopping wasn’t very appealing to us, and the water sports that are proposed weren’t available due to the low tide. We then decided to go on a Mangrove tour, on a boat just for us 4! The guide coming along us was very friendly and knew how to answer our questions along the tour. He brought us along Batam’s Mangrove, where we spotted some snakes around the branches of the trees and where we could see little villages along the river. We came back to the resort during the sunset, giving us the best sight of Batam on our left and Singapore on our right.

Overall, we had an excellent time during this 2hours++ tour and I would definitely recommend it if you are a good group of people!

Overall review of Montigo Resort

Our 3 days/2 nights stay at Montigo Resort Batam was perfect for what we expected. The facilities of the resort (restaurants, buggy service, spa, activities), as well as the quality of the services offered reached our expectations. Yes, there is no proper beach to lay down by the sea… but really, it doesn’t bother once you are there, as the pools are great to chill by. It is also good to highlight that even if we experienced some small issues in the villa with the showers, the staff immediately took actions to make us feel comfortable and sent the manager to come greet us in the new villa we moved in.

I would definitely recommend the resort for people that like to go away from Singapore, to enjoy some quietness while being in a luxury environment. This resort has nothing to do with all the big family resorts that you can typically find in Bintan and Batam, where everything is overpriced and often crowded. Here, you can truly enjoy some quality time with your loved ones :-).

Would recommend for: Couples, Families with older kids, Group of friends.

Good to know:

  • Language: Good English from all the staff
  • Currency: Indonesian Rupiah and SGD accepted
  • Electricity: Same as Singapore
  • Date of the trip: August 2016
  • Good for: Couples as well as families with kids (the resort is big enough to not be on each other space)

What are your thoughts ?
